Family Search Centers: A Resource for Genealogy Enthusiasts



Family Search Centers are branches of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They provide various services and resources for research and study of genealogy and family history.


What can you do at a Family Search Center?


At a Family Search Center, you can:

  • Get personalized help from local volunteers on how to use FamilySearch and how to do family history research.

  • Access computers, internet, and subscription family history websites for free. (Available resources vary by location.)

  • View images of historical records that are only available in centers.

  • Learn more about your ancestors and their heritage in a space dedicated to family history.


Where can you find a Family Search Center?


You can find the address of a local center on the FamilySearch website. You can also use the FamilySearch app to locate a center near you. There are over 5,000 centers worldwide, so chances are there is one close to where you live.

The center offers access to four computers and the FamilySearch Center Portal page, which gives free access to premium family history software and websites. The center also has staff who can help you with your research questions and provide guidance on how to use FamilySearch. The center does not maintain any permanent film or fiche collection, but you can order microfilms from the Family History Library to view at the center.


If you are looking for more resources in the local area, you can also visit the Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center, which maintains a Local and State History room at the Main Headquarters library downtown.

What is the FamilySearch center premium content browser extension?


The FamilySearch center premium content browser extension is a tool that allows users at FamilySearch centers or Meetinghouses of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to access premium websites, including free access to many subscription genealogical sites. To use this browser extension, users need to install it from the web store or the web for Chrome or Firefox browsers respectively. After installing the extension, users can navigate to the portal site at: https://www.familysearch.org/centers/portal and click on View All Sites under Premium Family History Websites to see a list of available sites. The extension works by enabling a proxy connection using the building's Wi-Fi connection that verifies the location of the FamilySearch center / Church Meetinghouse and grants access to the premium content. The extension cannot be used in affiliate libraries.
